Bayesian Analysis of Stochastically Ordered Distributions of Categorical Variables

چکیده
This paper considers a nite set of discrete distributions all having the same nite support. The problem of interest is to assess the strength of evidence produced by sampled data for a hypothesis of a speciied stochastic ordering among the underlying distributions and to estimate these distributions subject to the ordering. We present a Bayesian approach alternative to the use of the posterior probability of the hypothesis and the Bayes factor in favour of the hypothesis. Computational methods are developed for the implementation of Bayesian analyses. Examples are analyzed to illustrate the inferential and computational developments in the paper. The methodology employed for testing a hypothesis is seen to apply to a wide class of problems in Bayesian inference and has some distinct advantages.

Bayesian inference about odds ratio structure in ordinal contingency tables
When the goal of a study is to compare two groups on an ordinal categorical scale, a large number of inferential methods are available. Most methods are designed to detect a location effect, such as by focusing a single-degree-of-freedom test on an effect parameter. Often, rather than merely summarizing by a P -value to describe the evidence against a null hypothesis, it is of interest to consi...
متن کاملDispersive Ordering and k-out-of-n Systems
Extended Abstract. The simplest and the most common way of comparing two random variables is through their means and variances. It may happen that in some cases the median of X is larger than that of Y, while the mean of X is smaller than the mean of Y. However, this confusion will not arise if the random variables are stochastically ordered. Similarly, the same may happen if one would like to ...
متن کاملBayesian Analysis of Multiple Group Nonlinear Structural Equation Models with Ordered Categorical and Dichotomous Variables: A Survey
This paper is designed to give a complete overview of the literature that is available, as it relates to application of the Bayesian analysis model to investigate multiple group nonlinear structural equation models, also known as SEMs, including those having ordered categorical, dichotomous and categorical-dichotomous mixed variables. It will also work to summarize Bayesian multiple group nonli...
متن کاملClassifications with relations. I. A model for the description of distributions and their distances
Distributions on classifications are met wherever we work with categorical variables. A vast investigation has been done in developing methods for statistical analysis of nominal variables (e.g. variables with simple classification), partially are solved also problems for ordered classifications and classifications with assigned numbers. In this paper we propose a general model which enables us...
متن کاملOrdered Random Variables from Discontinuous Distributions
In the absolutely continuous case, order statistics, record values and several other models of ordered random variables can be viewed as special cases of generalized order statistics, which enables a unified treatment of their theory. This paper deals with discontinuous generalized order statistics, continuing on the recent work of Tran (2006). Specifically, we show that in general neither re...
